a disease marked by eruption on the skin, digestive disturbances, a nervous condition, and sometimes insanity. It is caused by improper diet, especially one lacking sufficient nicotinic acid (niacin). »

Pellagra is a deficiency disease prevalent in districts where maize is one of the staple foodstuffs (Beaumont and Dodds).
